Monday, June 21Introduction: From Surfing to Serving
    What we'll do:
    1. examine a broad range of powerful educational uses of new technologies
    What to do by next class:
    1. each two-person team should find two rank-ordered exemplary personal web sites (a personal web site is a web site created by a person to describe him/herself). Email me j-levin@uiuc.edu the URLs, short descriptions, especially including why your team thinks they are exemplary
    2. find five rank-ordered exemplary educational web sites which you might use in your teaching and five rank-ordered exemplary web sites you might want your students to use, email the URLs, short descriptions, and why you think they are exemplary to me
    3. read Bruce & Levin paper and send me (in the same email message as the exemplary educational web site message) at least one question you have about the paper

Tuesday, June 22The big picture: A taxonomy of educational uses of technology What we'll do:
  1. review your exemplary educational web sites: what makes an exemplary use of new technologies?
  2. exploration of the wide range of educational uses of technology - the Bruce & Levin taxonomy
  3. review the exemplary personal (autobiographical) web sites: what makes an exemplary personal web page
  4. eportfolios on the web
  5. collaborative uses for professional development: TAPPED IN
What to do by next class:
  1. read "Technology in Action" by John McSweeney on integrating technology into the classroom at http://glef.org/learnlive/book/technology/mcswen1.html
  2. Send me at least one question about this reading and at least one question on integrating technology into your curriculum
  3. where does one of your exemplary educational web sites fit into the Levin & Bruce taxonomy? What resources would be needed for you to use this web site? What educational goals would it be likely to achieve?
  4. log into TAPPED IN, establish an account, and explore it with guest access
  5. find an exemplary room in TAPPED IN and send me its name, a short description, and why you find it exemplary
  6. create or modify your own personal web page, including ePortfolio elements (you can use this template file if you want; if you do, here's a quick guide of how to save and modify it)

Thursday, June 24Curricular Integration of Technology What we'll do:
  1. conversation with Kim Harris, TEP MA 1998 "Tech Tools"
  2. review of your exemplary personal web pages: what makes an exemplary personal web page
  3. ePortfolios: uploading your own personal web page to a web server
  4. review your reports on TAPPED IN: online resources for your own professional development
What to do by next class:
  1. put your personal web page on a web server - use the "Putting your web pages on the TEP server" handout

Friday, June 25Instructional Design What we'll do:
  1. explore psychological and other design principles
  2. introduction to TEbase
What to do by next class:
  1. Create a new web page containing your major project proposal, and submit the name and the URL to TEbase
  2. look through the Harnessing the Power of the Web web site, then select a web-based project that you might want to participate in with your class, and enter into TEbase its name and a short description (and, if one exists, the URL)
  3. look briefly through the rest of the Global Schoolnet site and post to TEbase at least one question that you'd like to ask Al Rogers about educational network-based projects

Monday, June 28Web-based Educational Projects What we'll do:
  1. A conversation with Al Rogers, Global Schoolnet Foundation
What to do by next class:
  1. Create a web page for the web-based project you might want to participate in, and submit the URL to TEbase
  2. Read the entries on the ASCD forum on Technology (and if you have something constructive to add, post an entry)
  3. submit to TEbase one or more questions to ask Barbara Miller about the institutional integration of technology
  4. Read the "interactive paper" by Nick Burbules "Technology in Education: Who, Where, When, What, & Why?" at http://lrsdb.ed.uiuc.edu:591/ipp/fivews.html and respond to at least one of the paragraphs

Tuesday, June 29Institutional Integration of Technology What we'll do:
  1. A conversation with Barbara Miller, Principal, Fuerte Elementary School, TEP MA 1985
What to do by next class:
  1. Pick one of the CTER OnLine White Papers to read; create a web page summarizing the strengths and weaknesses of the paper you've chosen; post the URL to TEbase and email the URL to the white paper authors

Thursday, July 1Social & Policy Issues concerning Technology: Creating futures that maximize the positives and minimize the negatives What we'll do:
  1. Examine each of the issues addressed by the white papers
What to do by next class:
  1. Create in a progress report of your major project on the web; submit to TEbase the name of your project and the URL to a web page describing your progress so far, what your plans are, and any barriers you've run up against.

Tuesday, July 6Research, Development, & Evaluation of Technology: Riding the "trailing edge" What we'll do:
  1. Explore ways to think about research and development of technologies and research on the educational uses of technologies and
What to do by next class:
  1. Read through Margaret Riel's Learning Spaces in the Networld of Tomorrow: Future Learning Spaces: A VIP Experience at MBARI web site
  2. write up a brief "vision" of how education could/should operate in the year 2020 (as a web file) and submit the URL to TEbase
  3. Respond to at least two progress reports by classmembers that don't already have two responses, giving constructive criticism. Examine the reports and post your feedback in the TEP 231 Major Project Feedback page at http://tep-www.ucsd.edu:591/ipp/tep231-feedback.html

Wednesday, July 7Understanding, Care, & Repair of Technology What we'll do:
  1. Review your 2020 visions
  2. Explore ways to approach problems with technology, include diagnosis, treatment, and preventive maintainence
What to do by next class:
  1. Read the Levin & Miyake paper
  2. Prepare short oral presentation and create a web page containing a written report of your major project, and submit the name, a short description, and the URL to TEbase

Thursday, July 8Project Presentations & Summary What we'll do:
  1. Make a short (5 minute) presentation of your major project
  2. Turn in a written report of your major project -- it can be the web page that you submitted to TEbase
